YAD ELIE is a non-profit, grassroots organization that raises money to provide daily nutritious meals for needy children in and around Jerusalem.
YAD ELIE was founded December 15, 2002, in memory of
Elie Saghroun, z'l, who passed away on this date three years before.
Elie came to live in Israel in 1995 and loved Israel deeply. The welfare
of the country and particularly of its children was of great concern to him.
Elie would have been appalled to see how many Israeli youngsters today
are living under the poverty line, and are not being fed properly.
A recent estimate of the Israeli government has shown that some 730,000
children are not receiving proper nutrition on a daily basis.
Many are going to bed hungry.
Malnutrition directly affects one's ability to learn. A child cannot concentrate on his/her school work on an empty stomach. It goes without saying that this has very negative consequences on their future. Therefore, YAD ELIE is dedicated to providing nutritious meals within in the school setting.
YAD ELIE operates under the umbrella of Keren Boaz, a foundation linked to Machon Schechter which provides school supplies to needy children. In some cases the efforts of the two organizations are complementary. Thus, for example, Keren Boaz is paying the cost of transporting "dropouts" to a special school in Jerusalem where they attend evening classes, while YAD ELIE is providing food for them on site.
Together with other organizations and institutions, YAD ELIE is working to fill the ever-widening gap in the provision of welfare services in Israel, in order to ease human suffering and extend opportunity to all.
